Cottonport

A Mass of Christian Burial for Eleanor Marcotte Slocum will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church in Cottonport with Rev. John Wiltse officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden Mausoleum located in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Escude Funeral Home of Cottonport.

Mrs. Slocum, age 77 of Cottonport, passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at her residence after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Eleanor was a devoted wife and mother, raising six children. She was a faithful and dedicated woman in all facets of her life. Eleanor graduated from Mansura High School in 1962. She was crowned the first Miss Cochon de Lait Queen her junior year. As a senior, she was proud to represent her school as Miss Mansura High. Eleanor was an active member of her community serving on numerous boards including Cottonport Quarterback Club, Girl Scout troop leader, CCD teacher, Relay for Life, Chamber of Commerce, APAC, and many others. Eleanor was a hard-working mother with an impeccable work ethic. In her early years, she was a clerk for the town of Cottonport. She was recently awarded for being the longest tenured Commissioner of Elections for Avoyelles Parish but her favorite job by far was being Human Resources manager at Garan, Inc. where she worked for over 25 years. She helped countless people gain employment and established life-long friendships.

Eleanor is preceded in death by her husband Steve “Poke” Slocum; her parents Hillary “Ray” and Eleanor “Mickey” Marcotte; her brother Manny Marcotte; and father of her children, Gary Lemoine.

Those left to cherish her memory are her six children, Angela (David) Lakvold of Baton Rouge, Brett (Loretta) Lemoine of Ft. Worth, Tx., Shayne (Dede) Lemoine of Cottonport, Garrett Lemoine of New Orleans, Gina (Patrick) Neck of Lake Charles, Robin (Chance) Davis of Boyce. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren, Madison Lakvold, Gabe Lakvold, TJ Lemoine, Bailey Lemoine, Hannah (Mikey) Bordelon, Reagan Lemoine, Caroline Neck, Benjamin Neck, Elizabeth Neck, Scott Davis, and Lily Davis. Other survivors include her sister Erna Firmin of Bush, brother Michael Marcotte of Mansura and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will include her grandsons: TJ Lemoine, Reagan Lemoine, Benjamin Neck, Gabe Lakvold, Scott Davis, and her sons-in-law Dave Lakvold, Pat Neck, and Chance Davis.

Friends and family may visit on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church in Cottonport.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Eleanor Slocum Scholarship fund which will help a needy child pursue higher education.
